      <image:title>Torrent</image:title>
<image:caption>Torrent is a continuation of a series of multi-screen animations dealing with water flow Martine has been producing since 2010. Using only simple white and black graphics Torrent portrays the process of water trickling, pouring and cascading down the walls, swirling onto the floor as a stylised animated whirlpool, and then finally draining away to nothing. In this way the image of the waterfall whirlpool may be both allegorical and spectacle and be considered simultaneously benign and majestic bringing to mind a variety of associations, ranging from the desktop screensaver, a YouTube relaxation sleep video, the grandiose power of an actual waterfall, to the malevolent spectacle of a natural disaster and the incongruity of seeing water flowing from places where it normally shouldn’t. In addition, the idea of a torrent while traditionally referring to the flow of water has now the more everyday association of the flow of data, the cascade of downloading that is happening anywhere at anytime. In this work the reductive animated flowing substitute allows the spectator walk within it, to become immersed in the kinetic excess, despite being a minimal imitation of the real thing. Philip Brophy’s score is based around a series of directed performances and improvisational passages by harpist Mary Doumany. It was important for the harp to be the central identity, playing upon the historical iconography of the harp and its associations with swirling water while also allowing it to break out this archetype to also produce rich textural sounds. There are no other instruments in the composition, only harp, both natural and processed oscillating between representation and abstraction, combining melodic muzak-like gestures with more unfamiliar abstract harp textures. A stereo and Dolby Digital 7.1 mix of the score to Torrent will be released on the CD/DVDR-audio discs of Filmmusic Vol.4 on Sound Punch Records.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reduction has become a contemporary imperative, a mantra for both our civic and personal well-being. To use less, to want less, to reject the superfluous. Speaking through the doctrines of Modernist abstraction, contemporary lifestyle minimalism and retirement advice, the reductive ethos is subliminally transmitted to the viewer using the flash frame technique – an efficient process developed for training WW2 fighter pilots.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When a space becomes disused and left to itself, what happens? Does it sit patiently inert, or does it let itself slowly decompress, releasing built up emissions of past daily processes continuing unabated and unmonitored – except by you. Melt is a site-specific audio-visual installation that makes use of the decommissioned ticket booth as an aperture into an abandoned realm. Using spatialised sound and projected animation, Melt materializes the outflow of years of transactions, and exchange that have accumulated within the station over time. The soundscape indicates that Melt extends beyond the ticket office and into the broader station complex. The once solid bricks and mortar become soluble and unstable. This work is experienced from the ticket booth window, a single point of perspective. The participation with the work recreates the personal exchange encountered when purchasing a ticket or asking for information, only one ‘customer’ at a time. By reactivating the obsolescent interface of commuter/employer transaction through the ticket window, Melt invites the audience to participate and complete the artwork. Animation: Martine Corompt. Sound: Camilla Hannan. Commissioned as part of MoreArt 2015</image:caption>

<image:caption>Standing at the shoreline, gazing out at the vast limitless expanse of ocean, what do we expect to see? Our future? Possible impending doom? The tides of cultural change? Clichés like visual caricature are a form of reduction, and in a visually saturated culture where the emphasis is continually on fidelity, resolution and realism, what place does the stylised simplistic and flattened pictorial representation have as an affecting experience? The western impulse to ‘make real’ the artificial has driven image technology away from the graphic, and towards mimesis. A long sheet of paper becomes a swirling vista as the animated tide-line laps at its edges, and then resumes its blank material properties as the water recedes.</image:caption>
